Johann Karl Grether (* 1808 in Schopfheim ; † 1887 ibid) was a German dyer, mayor and historian.

From 1844 to 1873 Grether was mayor of Schopfheim. During the Baden Revolution of 1848/49 he was briefly arrested and imprisoned in September 1848 by the militant Mögling. He had skilfully steered the city through these troubled times without seriously provoking the displeasure of the revolutionaries or the authorities. In 1850 he was awarded the golden civil merit medal of the state of Baden for his dutiful behavior during the revolution.

Grether promoted the construction of the railway from Basel to Schopfheim. Schopfheim was connected to the line in 1862. He wrote a handwritten chronicle of the city of Schopfheim , which became the basis of the Eberlin chronicle in 1878 .
