The Fellner sinkhole is a sinkhole with a cave near the Upper Franconian Gößweinstein in the Forchheim district in Bavaria .

Geographical location

The Fellner sinkhole at the southern foot of the Breitenberg , one kilometer east of Gößweinstein, is one of the largest sinkholes on the plateau of the Franconian Alb. With a length of 384 meters and a total depth of 97.6 meters, the cave under the sinkhole is one of the deepest caves in the Franconian Alb. Contrast water studies have shown that there is a direct connection between the Fellner sinkhole and the Stempfermühlquelle in the Wiesent valley at a distance of 1.6 kilometers.

The cave was developed by means of digging and blasting in 1899 by Hans Brand . The secured access to the cave is west of a seven meter deep sinkhole and is always locked. A visit to the cave is only recommended to really experienced speleologists .

The Fellner sinkhole has been designated as a geotope (474H001) and natural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment . The cave is registered as D 99 in the Franconian Alb cave register (HFA).

The cave researcher Ferdinand Haselmeier from Gößweinstein has designed a geological circular hiking trail about 6.5 kilometers long called "From the Fellner sinkhole to the Stempfermühlquelle". The hiking trail is provided with information boards and designed as a circular route. The exact course of the route can be viewed in OpenStreetMap .
