Johann Kayser (poet)

Johann Kayser (* 1654 in Lippstadt ; † March 9, 1721 in Kleve ) was a Westphalian poet, Lutheran preacher and high school teacher.

Life

Johann Kayser was born in Lippstadt in 1654 as the son of the Lippstadt mayor Johann Kayser and his wife Maria, née Klotz. He attended high school at the Marienkirche (Lippstadt) and in 1669 went to study at the University of Jena , which he completed with a master's degree. After further studies he returned to Lippstadt and became a teacher at his former school. In 1677 he was promoted to vice rector . At the same time, Kayser worked as a preacher in the Cappel monastery . In 1678 Kayser married Anna Catharina Nottebohm, the marriage remained childless. A year later, Kayser was promoted to rector at the grammar school.

In 1683 Johann Kayser was called to Kleve as a preacher and pastor , and he moved to the city on the Lower Rhine . From 1700 he was also inspector of the Lutheran ministry in the Duchy of Kleve . He started poetry here and became known nationwide as a priest and poet. In 1698 he wrote the Parnassus Clivensis, translated as Clevischer Musenberg . In addition, 10 collections of sermons and theological writings appeared under his name.

In 1721 Johann Kayser died of a stroke during an afternoon service on the second Sunday of Lent ( Reminiscere ) .
