Johann Lindemann (church musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Lindemann (* around 1550 in Gotha ; † 1630 ibid) was a German hymn poet and composer .

Life

Johann Lindemann was born in Gotha around 1550; According to Christian Gottlieb Jöcher , he was a son of the pedagogue Cyriacus Lindemann , the ADB author Albert Schumann, however, claims that Lindemann was a son of Nikolaus Lindemann, who in turn was brother of Cyriacus. Not much is known about Johann Lindemann's life either, he was a master of philosophy , he was also a teacher and cantor in Gotha since 1580 . He held this office until his death in 1630.

Lindemann is associated with the German versions of the songs In dir is joy in all suffering and Jesus, want us wise , the Italian ballettos by Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi . In the past, Lindemann was also credited with the authorship of the texts, but this is not true. It is doubtful whether he even wrote poetry himself. The texts, which come from Cyriacus Schneegaß , were ascribed to Lindemann in the older literature, since they first appeared in the Amorum Filii collection published by Lindemann in 1598 . The unknown author of the ADB ruled that the song, Herr Jesu, had been praised and had the greatest claim to Lindemann's authorship; Albert Schumann, on the other hand, thinks that it was "without a doubt written by L [indemann]".
