Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi (* around 1553 in Caravaggio , Lombardy , † January 4, 1609 in Mantua ) was an Italian singer and composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods .

Life

Born in Lombardy, Gastoldi came to Mantua with his father Manfredo Gastoldi, where he received his musical training and studied theology as a choirboy at the Basilica of Santa Barbara. In 1572 Gastoldi became a subdeacon, in 1574 a deacon and a year later he was ordained a priest. Gastoldi received benefices , connected with the obligation to give singing lessons to the choirboys.

As a member of the band, he participated in the composition of the repertoire requested by Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga (who was also a composer himself). An attempt made by Cardinal Karl Borromeo in 1582 to bring Gastoldi to Milan was unsuccessful. Because of incorrectly reproduced information in the " Ateneo dei letterati milanesi adunati dall'abbate Don Filippo Picinelli " from 1670, Johann Gottfried Walther wrote in his musicians' lexicon in 1732 that he was "a famous composer at Mayland Cathedral ", although Gastoldi had been his entire life had only worked in Mantua.

Due to several serious illnesses and absences of the conductor Giaches de Wert , Gastoldi had to represent him more frequently in the period from 1582 to 1586. In 1588 Gastoldi de Wert received the position of Kapellmeister to S. Barbara in Mantua and held this office until his death.

In addition to his work at S. Barbara, he composed numerous important secular works for the needs of the court of Prince Vincenzo I Gonzaga , who had ruled since 1588 , and where important composers such as Benedetto Pallavicino (around 1551–1601) and the young Claudio Monteverdi worked at that time .

Gastoldi was best known for his balletti and the “ madrigal comedies ” (forerunners of opera), which were reprints in many cities in Europe as early as the 17th century, while his church compositions were long overlooked by musicologists.
