Life

After attending school in Budissin, today's Bautzen, Hartz started his apprenticeship as a merchant at the colonial goods wholesaler with blue color warehouse Kraft & Co. in Leipzig. He rose in the company to become co-owner. He made many friends through his ability and community spirit.

From 1823 to 1833 he was a member of the city council, temporarily also its vice chairman. He was also city governor and assessor at the commercial court. When the Sparkasse Leipzig opened on February 22, 1826 , he was its first honorary head. The same was true of the pawnshop he had campaigned for. He was co-director of the sanatorium for eye patients and the poor institution.

His commitment to the poor is also reflected in his foundation work. In 1824 he donated 2,500 thalers for the establishment of a foster care facility, which was responsible for the guidance and control of foster mothers who had orphans in charge of paying for orphans. He gave 10,000 thalers to build an old people's home for the poor. In his will, he bequeathed his mining kuxe to the poor relief institution in Leipzig , which yielded around 3,000 thalers a year.

In 1832 the king named him representative of the trade and industry in the Saxon state parliament . Due to illness, he was no longer able to take up the position. After half a year of illness, he died of tuberculosis .
