Johann Ludwig Kisling (born June 16, 1746 in Durlach ; † February 24, 1815 , ibid) was a portrait court painter from Baden .

Live and act

He was the son of the famous Baden portrait court painter Philipp Heinrich Kisling (1713–1767), learned a. a. with his father and followed him as a talented portraitist. Residing in his birthplace Karlsruhe-Durlach, he mainly painted members of the Baden ruling family and their surroundings. In the early 19th century, Johann Ludwig Kisling also ran a drawing school there. His wife was called Karolina and they had at least 6 children together.

When the inventor Karl von Drais wanted to apply for his patent in 1813 for a four-wheeled "horse- less carriage" powered by a rear treadmill , it was officially said that the painter Kisling from Durlach had already constructed a similar machine 25-30 years ago, and thus from Durlach went to Karlsruhe . Written documents about this could no longer be found even then. The first house numbers in Durlach were introduced in 1793. The council decided to have them made by the painter Kisling based on his model and paid him four cruisers for each number painted. As early as 1791 the new clock face was painted by him at the town hall.
