Johann Navrátil (physician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Navratil (Czech: Jan Navrátil , born January 26, 1909 in Neu Spielberg near Melk , Lower Austria, † 1992 in Vienna ) was a Czech-Austrian doctor, university professor, cardiac surgeon and international pioneer of cardiac surgery technology.

Life

Johann Navrátil moved with his Czech parents in 1919 after the First World War from Lower Austria, first to Kaschau (Košice) in eastern Slovakia and in 1923 to Brno (Brno) in Moravia, where he also found his training. From 1953 he dealt with heart operations, in 1954 he was appointed professor of surgery.

He was head of the Second Surgical University Clinic in Brno “Svatá Anna” and in 1967 was appointed head of the Second Surgical Clinic at the Vienna General Hospital in order to develop modern cardiac surgery there and where he expected even better research opportunities in cardiomedicine. His professional change to Vienna, in the then so hopeful thaw of the Cold War , meant after the surprising suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968 and the subsequent " normalization " in the 1970s, also a significantly painful separation from his previous place of work in "his “Brno Heart Clinic. He died in Vienna at the age of 83, but was buried in the Brno Central Cemetery. In 1966 Johann Navrátil was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 2009 he was made an honorary citizen of Brno posthumously , and his house is adorned with a memorial plaque.
