Johann Rudolf Kölner , called der Saure (born August 22, 1800 in Basel ; † January 28, 1877 in Liestal ), was a citizen of Basel and Augst .

Life

His father was the teacher Johann Heinrich, his mother Anna Margaretha, geb. Rosenburger. Kölner attended grammar school in Basel and then began studying law there as well. In 1823 he married Anna Christina, b. Long knife from Basel.

In the Swiss regiment in France in 1820 he trained as a sergeant and secretary of a court martial. From 1821 to 1831 Kölner lived as a teacher and poet in Basel. As an open free thinker, he often came into conflict with his superiors. From 1830 he supported the representatives of the Basel landscape in their demands for legal equality and in 1831, with Emil Remigius Frey , sided with the rebels. From 1832 he was secretary of the higher court and lived as a political writer in Augst. His best-known works are the Raurazische Lieder from 1833. Kölner always created new enemies through his critical and uncomfortable manner. Over the years he often switched between the city of Basel and the countryside. As a legal advisor and publicist, he supported radicals at home and abroad.
