Johann Rudolf Wetter (born November 8, 1705 in Herisau ; † after 1767, presumably in Orange ; resident in Herisau) was a Swiss textile entrepreneur and industrial pioneer from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johann Rudolf Wetter was a son of Lorenz Wetter and brother of Adrian Wetter . He was married to Jeanne Fiquet, French. Wetter came to France when he was 14 . In the 1720s he became a partner in the trading house Binder, Wetter et Compagnie in Marseille . In 1744 he founded the first textile printing company in Marseille. This went into liquidation in 1755 . He was a partner in a cloth factory in Aubagne , Provence , and a soap factory in the Netherlands . Until 1767 he headed the fabric printing manufacturer Manufacture de IR Wetter et sa Compagnie à Orange Bon Teint , which he founded in Orange in 1757 . This produced high-quality and sought-after colorful cotton fabrics, so-called toiles d'Orange . Wetter was one of France's industrial pioneers.
