Johann Stapfer (born June 11, 1809 in Horgen ; † January 1, 1886 there ) was a Swiss politician and businessman . From 1861 to 1863 he was a member of the National Council.

biography

Johann Stapfer was the son of the silk industrialists, mayors and Grossrats John Stapfer and came from an old family Horgen. His mother was Susanna Hüni. From 1820 to 1826 he attended the teaching institute of the Hüni brothers in Horgen and completed a commercial apprenticeship at the Zuppiger company in Bergamo.

Johann Stapfer joined the silk factory Johann Stapfer Sons in Horgen as a partner and was active in the management until his death. He ended his military career as weapons chief of the Zurich snipers in 1852 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Johann Stapfer was a founder of the Horgen field rifle club.

Johann Stapfer was a district judge and was a member of the Zurich Cantonal Council from 1852 to 1869, where he represented liberal views. From 1861 to 1863 he represented Zurich in the National Council and was counted among Alfred Escher's circle . He held numerous board memberships, such as that of the Rentenanstalt and the Schweizerische Nordostbahn . He served as an auditor for the then Swiss credit institution . From 1854 to 1863 he was president of the Zurich silk industry.
