Johann d'Arnal (actually Jean ) (* 1729 in Valleraugue ; † September 11, 1793 in Brussels ) was a colonel engineer and a knight of the Maria Theresa order .

His ancestors, who came from the Gévaudan , also wrote Arnail . His parents were Sieur Maurice d'Arnal de Saint-Maurice and Marguerite Finiel. His younger brothers were Étienne d'Arnal (1733-1801; canon in Alès , developed a steam engine in 1781 ( moulins à feu ) and received a patent for navigating the rivers). and Maurice d'Arnal (1735-1801).

Johann d'Arnal became a major in the Austrian army in 1775 and a lieutenant colonel in 1784. After his brother had found a device to convert the movement of a weighing beam into a continuous circular movement, Johann received a twelve-year privilege on his fire mill in 1784 . Sebastian von Maillard helped him apply these to arts in mines.

During the Turkish war he distinguished himself in August 1788 in the bombardment and conquest of the castle of Turkish Dubiza . During the siege of Novi he was in charge of geniuses, contributed to the storming of the square on October 3 and was promoted to colonel.

During the siege of Berbir from June 23 to July 10, 1789, he was in charge of the genius. After he had distinguished himself at Belgrade, he was decorated with the Theresa Cross.

After the peace treaty he went to the Netherlands and died a little later in Brussels.
