Life

Johann tom Ring was the son of the painter Hermann tom Ring . The tom Ring family influenced the art scene in their hometown of Münster. Among other things, they were trend-setting for the establishment of the Renaissance in northwest Germany. The high altar in the provost church in Werl , the so-called tom-ring altar, is the only work by this painter that is secured by a signature. At this point in time he was around 28 years old and his choice of subjects was in keeping with the long artistic tradition of medieval storytelling. He used a popular, simplistic design language with clear lines and light colors. tom Ring served as models for Hendrick Goltzius and Hans von Aachen . The family had the crucified Christ in their coat of arms.
