Johanna Schmidt-Räntsch

Johanna Schmidt-Räntsch (* 5. October 1957 as Jürgen Schmidt-Räntsch ) is a German lawyer and since 2002 member of the Federal Court .

Life

Born in the Rhineland, Johanna Schmidt-Räntsch comes from Bonn and studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität . After receiving her doctorate in 1983, she briefly held a research assistant position there. In August 1984 she joined the higher judicial service of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and worked for three years as a trial reporter at various courts in the Cologne Higher Regional Court . In August 1987 she was appointed judge at the Bonn Regional Court. In February 1991 she moved to the Federal Ministry of Justice , where she was head of the division for property and obligations law. Upon joining the Ministry, she was appointed Government Director and in August 1997, Ministerial Councilor.

In 1996, after the death of her father Günter Schmidt-Räntsch , Schmidt-Räntsch took over the new edition of the commentary on the German judicial law from him . She also drafted the anti-discrimination law from 2001.

On July 29, 2002, Schmidt-Räntsch was appointed a federal judge as a member of the Fifth Civil Senate of the Federal Court of Justice . In October 2005 she interned at the Spanish Court of Cassation as part of a judge exchange program at the highest courts of the EU countries.

She is honorary professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin and co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Immobilienrecht (ZfIR). In addition, she has made a name for herself with numerous publications and seminars on the subject.

Private

Schmidt-Räntsch is married to the lawyer Annette Schmidt-Räntsch, who works at the Federal Environment Ministry, and they have a son together.

In June 2014 it was published that Schmidt-Räntsch had undergone gender reassignment measures and a change of name and civil status. For the Federal Court of Justice this is a private matter that is treated like a name change at the time of marriage. It is a formal act that does not require much effort.
