St. John Passion (Schütz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. John Passion ( SWV 481) , full title: Historia of the Passion and Death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ according to the Evangelist St. John , is a sacred choral work composed by Heinrich Schütz . An early version, created around 1665, bears the number 481a in the Schütz-Werke directory . The final version in common use today dates from 1666, when Schütz also composed the St. Matthew Passion .

The work was not performed for over 200 years and was only performed again in Bonn at the suggestion of Friedrich Spitta by Arnold Mendelssohn in the early 1880s .

In contrast to Bach's more well-known Passions , the line-up is purely vocal. There is, however, an arrangement by Arnold Mendelssohn with organ or piano accompaniment.
