The St. John the Baptist Church

The Johannes-der-Täufer-Kirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the village of Ostedt, part of the Wrestedt community, in the Uelzen district .

Location and surroundings

Ostedt is located in Lower Saxony , between Suhlendorf and Wieren , and is approximately 15 km from the Hanseatic city of Uelzen . The village of Ostedt was first mentioned in writing in 1032 as "Otstide", but the settlement existed much earlier. Finds from the time before the birth of Christ (iron slag and large boulders) attest to the early settlement of this area. And there have been Christians in the area of the old Lehmker parish for a long time (end of the 8th century).

history

In 1377 a field stone chapel was built in Ostedt (the internal dimensions: 11 m long, 6 m wide and 4 m high) and consecrated on February 4, 1378 by Erich von Winsen, Auxiliary Bishop of Verden, in honor of John the Baptist . At that time churches were only built over the bones of saints. In 1378 the Ostedter Chapel also received valuable relics. These are said to be parts of the bones of Saint Gereon and his sister. Every year since then, the parish fair has been celebrated on August 29th (day of the beheading of John the Baptist) - for 620 years now - from around 1800 as a harvest festival . At the end of the 11th century, the chapel was demolished because it was too small for the Ostedtern. Ancient documents and relics of Saint Gereon were found immured in the altar. These relics were walled up again on August 29, 1934, along with coins from the period and an edition of the Völkischer Beobachter . Everything was sealed airtight in a zinc container.

On October 10, 1909, the neo-Gothic church, which was built and planned by the Uelzer architect Eberhard Warnecke, was inaugurated. He was also responsible for planning and building the new church in Wieren . For the inauguration, the German Empress and Queen of Prussia gave the church a valuable altar Bible.

The big bell donated by the pastor and parishioners had to be delivered on August 3, 1942 for war purposes. In 1959 a new bell was installed in the tower of Ostedter Church. Together with a smaller bell from 1920, it now calls for services.

Cost of the new building

The money needed was borrowed from the Kreissparkasse Uelzen. First, 25,500 marks were borrowed and in June 1909 another 14.00 marks for the interior and exterior furnishings of the new church. Since the architect repeatedly misjudged the costs, another 6,790 marks had to be raised in 1910. In 1909 the construction and furnishing costs are estimated at around 40,000 marks. The actual costs, based on the accounting of 1913, now finally amount to around 65,000 marks. Everything was more expensive than originally thought.

Current usage, services and events

Every year on Ascension Day there is a festive service on the Ostedt sports field. And every year - whether on Sunday or everyday - the harvest festival is celebrated on the day of John the Baptist , i.e. on August 29th, in Ostedt . The St. John the Baptist Church Ostedt is currently part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Parish of Lehmke-Wieren.

Furnishing

Bell jar

On August 3, 1942, the bell donated by parishioners and Pastor Karsten Ratcke had to be handed in for war purposes. In 1959, however, a new bell was installed in the church tower; today it calls to worship together with a smaller bell from 1920.

particularities

In the transept gable there is a rose window that shines magnificently in the light. The construction method of the church also differs from the form of hall construction that is predominant in our region. A transept, whose arms have almost the same height, width and depth as the main nave, creates a central building character. Only the west arm is three meters longer than usual.

organ

The organ was installed by Furtwängler and Hammer in 1908 . In the course of time, considerable deficiencies became apparent, which, thanks to many donations and grants , were able to be remedied by the organ building workshop Johannes Klein from Oelde / Westphalia .

Altar Bible

For the inauguration on October 10, 1909, the last German Empress, Auguste Viktoria , gave the church an altar Bible with a personal dedication and signature. The Empress's words written there are: “Do not be afraid, you little flock; for it is good to your father to give you the kingdom ”(Luke 12:32)

War memorial

The war memorial commemorates Ostedter who died in the First and Second World Wars. It was inaugurated in 1921 by the pastor Julius Deppe.
