St. James Church

The St. Jakobus Church in Wieren in the Uelzen district belongs to the Wieren parish in the Uelzen parish of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church of Hanover . The church got its name in 1976 because of a representation of James on an old chalice. It was built in 1910/11 in the typical neo-Gothic style. The Wieren parish joined forces with the Lehmke parish in 2001 and has around 1200 parishioners.

history

A stone church has stood in Wieren since the 12th century . As early as 1892 the people of Wieren had demanded the construction of a new church. The number of inhabitants had more than doubled in the last 70 years, with a further 159 inhabitants in Drohe, so that the field stone church with its 226 seats became too small for the village community. The church also fell into disrepair. The wooden tower had to be renewed and in general the church threatened to tear due to the swampy meadow area on the walls and the vault of the choir. So in 1909 the construction of the new church began. It was designed by the Uelzen architect Eberhard Warnecke in the neo-Gothic style and had 380 seats. The St. James Church was consecrated on November 5, 1911. The construction cost a total of 90,397 marks and was financed by a loan from the Uelzener Kreissparkasse.

In 1917, after a long dispute over the right of way , the parish bought the property of the former cemetery site in Wieren, on which the church was built, for 4,700 marks. The old stone church had been more or less unused since 1911. For some time it was used as a book store and in 1930 it was opened as a hostel for youth groups at the instigation of the provost. That ended when the war began in 1939. Today the people of Wieren are happy about this old landmark. After various renovations, this listed stone church is used for worship and recently also as a concert room.

Furnishing

Steeple

The visitor enters the interior of the church through the beautiful entrance portal with rose window on the west side. The building is equipped with a vaulted wooden ceiling. Stained glass windows decorate and illuminate the choir and the brightly painted side walls of the ship. The side windows are set in two rows and show figurative representations in the top of the upper row: Martin Luther, Ernst the Confessor and the white Lower Saxony horse on a red background. A pietà from the 15th century carved out of wood awaits visitors in the entrance area, embedded in its own niche. The renaissance altar from 1649, which the parish received from the old Wrestedter castle chapel around 1850, is also a jewel worth seeing.

The organ is located above the entrance to the central nave. The organ gallery is open to visitors when the nave is full.

The copper cover of the tower was badly damaged by the war in April 1945. A new covering would have cost a lot of money, so only the worst damage was repaired in 1956. However, this did not help much, twelve years later a new roof was due. A bell was also removed because it was used to make ammunition. It could only be replaced in 1961. The church tower is 40 meters high and has two bells from 1910 and 1961. The church tower clock is from 1910.

church service

As a rule, services are held every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month in St. James' Church at 10:30 a.m. At the same time there is a children's service in the parish hall next to the church.

location

The St. Jakobus Church is centrally located in the village of Wieren, on a high plateau that used to be a cemetery. From the state road L270, which runs through the village, steep stairs lead up to the church building. The brick building literally towers over Wieren and greets visitors to the town with its towering church tower from afar.
