Johannes (Uppsala)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johan († 14 July or August 12. 1187 ) was 1185-1187 archbishop in Uppsala .

Almost nothing is known about his person. Apparently there was already a cathedral chapter in Old Uppsala that claimed the election of bishops. This is indicated by the designation "electio canonica" in the bull of appointment of Pope Lucius III. of November 5, 1185, which also contains a letter of protection for him and his church. It is the oldest surviving bull for Sweden. She also ordered tax exemption for the church. Church revenues were not allowed to be reduced during a sedis vacancy . This went against the custom that the income would go to the king during a sedis vacancy.

In 1187, Estonian pirates went on a raid on Mälaren . On the way back from Sigtuna , which had been burned down, the Estonian ships did not pass the defense works at Almarestäket on Lake Mälaren (today the largest castle ruin in Sweden), where the archbishop happened to be. The Estonians dug a sound west of Stäkesön, which is now backfilled (the E 18 passes there today), which was later called "Lilla Stäket" or "Ryssgraven". In the course of the fighting, the archbishop was killed on July 14 or August 12, 1187. He was the first archbishop to be buried in Gamla Uppsala Cathedral.
