Johannes Angermuller (* 1973 in Erlangen ) is a discourse researcher in the fields of linguistics and sociology. He is Professor of Discourse, Languages ​​and Applied Linguistics at the Open University, UK.

Life

Angermuller grew up in his hometown Erlangen. His parents are both mathematicians . In 1997 he completed his master's degree in sociology, Eastern European history and American studies at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 1999 to 2009 he was a research assistant or assistant at the University of Magdeburg . In 2003 he completed a binational doctorate in (linguistic) discourse analysis (University of Est Paris) and sociology (University of Magdeburg). From 2009 to 2012, he taught as a professor (W1) of Sociology at the University at Mainz University. In 2012 he was appointed professor of discourse analysis at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) in Warwick (Coventry, UK). At the same time he became a member of the Center d'Etude des Mouvements Sociaux at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. From now on he wrote his name without the umlaut (ü), but in older publications he is still listed under "Angermüller". In 2019 he moved to the Open University (Milton Keynes, UK).

Angermuller became known for his work on discourse analysis and post-structuralism . His research focus is on the complex organization of language use in a social context. His work on academic and political discourse deals with questions of power, knowledge and social change. He combines the French linguistic discourse analysis with qualitative approaches from the German and Anglo-Saxon tradition. He is particularly interested in propositional theories on subjectivity in language. Angermuller analyzes discourses as positioning practices in social communities and is particularly interested in the discursive construction of social order.

He was the project leader of the ERC DISCONEX research team, which examined the positioning practices and scientific cultures of researchers in the social sciences and humanities in the US, France, Germany and the UK. Since 2008, coordinated Angermuller discourse network , an interdisciplinary and international network in the field of discourse analysis. In 2019, DiskursNetz was founded as the "International Association of Discourse Studies" and elected Angermuller as its founding president. With Daniel Wrana he built the multilingual web portal http://www.discourseanalysis.net. In 1999 he initiated the Gradnet conference in Erlangen with Martin Nonhoff. He is co-editor of various book series such as: the Palgrave series Postdisciplinary Studies in Discourse ; the DiskursNetz series at transcript; Peter Lang: Transpects .
