Johannes Breitmeier

Johannes Breitmeier (* 1913 in Bernau near Berlin ; † 2002 ibid) was a German animal and landscape painter and book illustrator , who was particularly known for his precise powers of observation and his finely executed (colored) drawings.

During his time in Frankfurt (Oder) in the 1960s, he kept in close contact with the ornithologist Otto Fehringer , who was one of the managing directors of the then newly founded, non-profit Heidelberger Tiergarten GmbH from 1933 to 1938. Breitmeier mainly devoted himself to the detailed illustration of many well-known animal books for various publishers in the GDR and later also in the Federal Republic of Germany .

Breitmeier also gave lessons to other artists, including a. the painter Elisabeth Zander from the age of eight to fourteen.
