Johannes Clauss Voss
Johannes Clauß Voss (* 1858 in Moordiek near Horst (Holstein) ; † 1922 in Victoria (British Columbia) ) was a German-Canadian seafarer. He grew up in Schleswig-Holstein, where he learned to be a ship carpenter . After his first trips, he became a Canadian citizen and changed his name to John C. Voss .
He gained fame primarily through his circumnavigation of the world with the Tilikum , a converted dugout canoe , from 1901 to 1904. He reported on this and other voyages on small sailing boats in the book The Venturesome Voyages of Captain Voss .
His life is also the content of the fictional autobiography For a Thousand Dollar Around the World by Werner Gilde , who grew up near Moordiek and learned from contemporaries Voss' details about his youth, which he incorporated into his book.
Patrizio Bertelli replied that he was most pleased about the book The Venturesome Voyages of Captain Voss , when asked what gift he was looking forward to for his 69th birthday. He gave the advice: "Read the book, it is very interesting."
