Honored Technician of the People, Werner Gilde, 1952

Werner Gilde (born June 9, 1920 in Horst ; † February 2, 1991 in Halle / Saale ) was an internationally recognized expert for welding technology and technicians in the GDR.

Live and act

After primary school in Horst (Holstein) he passed the Abitur in Elmshorn in 1939 . Then he studied. After an interruption through work and military service (as a lieutenant in the artillery), he continued his studies in metallurgy , mineralogy and physics in Göttingen in 1945 , graduating in 1947 with a doctorate.

In 1948 Gilde became head of quality control in the Maxhütte Unterwellenborn ( SBZ , later GDR). He joined the SED . In 1952/53 he became department head at the Eisenforschungsinstitut Hennigsdorf (GDR), in 1952 he received the award of Honored Technician of the People . From 1953 to 1985 he worked as director of the Central Institute for Welding Technology (ZIS) in Halle / Saale. In 1962 the habilitation followed , from 1965 Gilde also taught as a professor at the TH Merseburg and TH Ilmenau . He owned over 100 patents.

Presentation of the National Prize of the GDR in 1964 by Walter Ulbricht

In 1962 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze and 1985 in gold, in 1964 and 1968 the National Prize of the GDR , he became a member of the Research Council of the GDR . Numerous scientific publications show his wide range of subjects. As director of the institute, he assumed that research services could be planned, measured by the number of patents submitted. With his uncompromising claim to above-average research performance, he had a very demanding demeanor towards his employees. He was linked by a close scientific collaboration and friendship with Borys Paton , the director of the Paton Institute for Electrofusion of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Kiev. Gilde retired in 1985, and Günther Thieme was his successor as director of the ZIS .

In addition to his scientific and popular science publications, numerous fiction books were also published. His retelling of the memories of circumnavigator Johannes C. Voss from Horst, “For a thousand dollars around the world”, was published in 1973 in Halle and was published five times in East and West Germany by 1984. Gilde's memories of the youth of Holstein “Life without a return ticket” (1980/1982 in Halle, 1983/1998 in Husum) were also published in both German states.

With a plastic sailing yacht built in the ZIS (the first in the GDR), he and his wife Henriette made long journeys in the Baltic Sea region. In 1971 Gilde became master of the GDR in deep sea sailing, a hobby he pursued very intensively on the Baltic Sea. He was also active in equestrian sports.

During his international lecture tours, Gilde often visited his place of birth, Horst, in Germany, where he had the manager of the local savings bank, who had bought the house of his deceased parents, manage his western income. More than 100 listeners attended his reading from his books, organized by the Horst Adult Education Center in November 1988.
