Johannes Gungl

Johannes Gungl (born May 13, 1968 in Graz ) was Managing Director of the Telecommunications and Post Department of the Austrian Broadcasting & Telecom Regulierungs-GmbH (RTR) and, in 2018, Chairman of the European Regulators for Electronic Communication (BEREK) .

Professional background

Johannes Gungl studied law at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz. After a post-graduate degree in European law in Schloss Hofen (Vorarlberg), Gungl worked in the energy sector, but switched to telecommunications in 1998, where he was Head of Legal & Regulatory Affairs for the Austrian subsidiaries of international groups ( Mannesmann / Vodafone / Western Wireless). Between 2006 and 2008 Gungl was General Counsel of Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Corporation Austria. Gungl then moved to Orange Austria Telecommunication GmbH , the subsidiary of the French telecom group France Telecom (today: Orange) and Mideuropa Partners, an investment fund, where he worked as the Head of Legal / Regulation and Human Resources.

After the statutory “cool-off” phase of one year had passed, Gungl was appointed Managing Director of the Telecommunications and Post department at RTR on February 1, 2014 by the Austrian Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Doris Bures .

In his role as Managing Director of the Telecommunications and Post Department at RTR, Johannes Gungl was Austria's representative on the European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC, BEREC - Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications). On December 8, 2016, Johannes Gungl was elected Vice-Chairman of BEREC for 2017 and Chairman of BEREC for 2018. On July 1, 2019, Johannes Gungl was replaced by Klaus M. Steinmaurer as Managing Director of the Telecommunications and Post department at RTR.
