Johannes Heinrich Luther

Johannes Heinrich Luther (born February 12th July / February 24th  1861 greg. In Tallinn , Estonia Governorate ; †  May 29, 1932 in Bad Cranz , East Prussia ) was a Baltic German Lutheran pastor and theologian.

life and work

Luther was born as the youngest son of the Estonian entrepreneur and businessman Alexander Martin Luther (1810–1876) and his third wife Henriette Caroline Luther, née. Steding, (1825–1905) born. His two brothers Christian Wilhelm Luther (1857–1914) and Carl Wilhelm Luther (1859–1903) continued the flourishing company of their father after his death. Johannes Heinrich Luther chose a theological career.

From 1871 to 1879 he attended the renowned government high school in Tallinn (German Reval ). He then studied Protestant theology from 1880 to 1885 at the University of Tartu (then Imperial University of Dorpat ). He was ordained on July 13, 1886 .

From 1886 to 1913 Luther was pastor of the parish of Kadrina ( Sankt Katharinen ). From 1913 to 1918 he was pastor of the Johannes parish in the East Estonian city of Narva . In 1918 he was provost of the Narva-Alutaguse provost at the same time .

In 1918 Luther emigrated to Germany with the proclamation of the Republic of Estonia. He settled in East Prussia . From 1918 to 1926 he was pastor at the Karkeln Church (today Mysovka in Kaliningrad Oblast ). In 1926 he retired. Until his death in 1932 he lived in the nearby seaside resort of Cranz, today's Zelenogradsk .

Private life

Luther was married to Maria Magdalena Krause (1861–1912), who came from a respected Baltic German theologian family. The son Carlos Luther emerged from the marriage.
