Johannes Kehrli (baptized February 27, 1774 in Brienz ; † July 13, 1854 there ) was a Swiss teacher, musician and tourism expert.

Life

Johannes Kehrli was the son of the Brienz farmer Jakob Kehrli and Ursula Wyss. In 1804 he married Barbara Schild, also from Brienz. The autodidactic schoolmaster dedicated himself particularly to school singing. In 1805 he performed with a girls' choir at the first Unspunnen Festival . With the support of the Bernese government, he opened the Giessbach Falls from 1818 .

In 1822 he built his first inn on his Giessbachwiese. Together with the Brienz pastor Daniel Wyss, he founded tourism to Giessbach. In 1834 he gave up the teaching profession and devoted himself with his children to the business, which took off with steamship in 1839. In 1855 his heirs sold the Giessbach to Conrad von Rappard .
