Johannes Leib (born April 28, 1591 in Streufdorf , Sachsen-Meiningen , † March 15, 1666 in Coburg ) was a German doctor , lawyer , poet and songwriter.

Life

He began his studies at the schools in Heldburg , Schleusingen (1608) and Gotha (1610), moved to the University of Jena in 1612, that of Altdorf in 1615, that of Ingolstadt in 1616 and Altdorf again in 1617, and settled in Coburg in 1619 as a general practitioner . Although he had mainly devoted himself to studying law at the universities mentioned, he was crowned Poëta laureatus in Altorf in 1616 .

He wrote writings such as “Tractat von Ganerbe”, “De prioritate creditorum” as well as “Zodiacus Christianus” and “De Praedestinatione ad vitam aeternam”. As a poet he published “Epigrammata de laudibus et laboribus Gustavi Adolphi R. Sueciae” and was the author of the hymn “Now all thank God for his great grace” to celebrate the end of the Thirty Years War , which has become part of several hymn books. He dealt with German proverbs and wrote in 1627 "Studentica hc Apophtegmata, symbola et proverbia ... germanico-latino-italica". The value of this collection lies in the actual proverbs as well as motto, currency and inscriptions, especially from Saxon electors, but also from popes, emperors and kings.
