Johannes Rabe (born July 21, 1821 in Charlottenburg ; † February 1, 1894 there ) was a German painter.

Life

Rabe came from a family of painters and was the son of the painter and drawing teacher at the Prussian court (Johannes) Wilhelm Rabe (1779-1859) and his wife Sophie (née Schuster). His brothers Robert (1825–1888) and Theodor (1822–1890) also became painters, as did his cousin Edmund Rabe . His uncle was the palace builder Martin Friedrich Rabe .

In 1843 and 1847 he accompanied Prince Albrecht of Prussia (1809–1872) on his travels to Greece and the Middle East . After his return to Berlin, he mainly worked as an architecture and landscape painter. At an unknown point in time he received the title court painter . Its interiors allow an idea of ​​rooms that no longer exist today, such as in the Prinz-Albrecht-Palais . In the watercolor collection from the estate of Queen Elisabeth of Prussia in the graphic collection of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg there are over 50 drawings by Rabe, mostly in pencil, which mainly show buildings in Potsdam and its surroundings, as well as views from them Berlin. Rabe had been a member of the Ex-Libris-Verein zu Berlin since March 21, 1892 and lived at Hardenbergstrasse 42 in 1893 .
