Life

Johannes Rauw comes from Meimbressen in Northern Hesse. He worked as a Protestant pastor from 1551 in Kirchlotheim , from 1571 in Haina and from 1580 until his death in the Hessian weather.

Works

Rauw's most important and best-known work is his Cosmographia , published in Frankfurt am Main in 1597 , a cosmography that contains numerous copperplate engravings of cities and maps on over a thousand folio pages in addition to theological, astronomical, geographical and ethnological information. Here he resorted to plates by the engraver Matthias Quad . Rauw also deals with the continent of America. However, despite further editions in 1612 and 1624 , the Cosmographia was not widely used.

In 1572 a Prognosticon Astrologicvm appeared for the year 1573.

In 1589, Rauw published a hymn book ( Wetterer Gesangbuch ) with melodies (cantonal), mostly composed of four parts, to songs by Martin Luther . In addition to these, it also contains rare hymns.
