Johannes Schmidt (sculptor)
Johannes Schmidt (also Johann Schmidt), (* 1684 in Bönstadt ; † June 28, 1761 in Mautern an der Donau ) was a German sculptor who worked in Austria .
life and work
Johannes Schmidt came from a Fassbinder family in Bönstadt in Upper Hesse. The Dürnstein provost Hieronymus Übelbacher brought the important woodcarver to Austria and gave him quarters in Grafenwörth . Because of the assignment to the figures of the Kaiserstiege in Göttweig Abbey, he moved to Stein an der Donau in 1725 .
He is the father of the painter Martin Johann Schmidt , called "Kremser Schmidt".
