Hieronymus Übelbacher (* 1674 in Hollabrunn ; † January 13, 1740 in Dürnstein ) was elected provost of Dürnstein Monastery in 1710 .

In 1693, at the age of eighteen, he entered the Dürnstein Monastery for a year of probation and in 1694 took his religious vows.

Übelbacher completed his philosophy studies in Olomouc in 1697 as a Primus with a doctorate.

His further studies took him to Vienna, where he held his public disputation on the whole of theology in 1700 with great success.

After the death of Provost Godefrid von Haslingen, Hieronymus Übelbacher was unanimously elected 30th Provost of the Dürnstein Monastery on June 15, 1710.

On August 21, 1710, Provost Übelbacher graduated as a doctor of theology in Vienna.

Hieronymus Übelbacher was extremely educated, the University of Vienna awarded him the purple doctor of the Holy Scriptures .

In 1715 he began to redesign the Augustinian Canons' monastery in Baroque style . He was responsible for the overall theological concept of the renovation and the design of a uniform equipment program. The lead builder was Joseph Munggenast , using designs from Jakob Prandtauer and Matthias Steinl .

The renovation of Dürnstein is characterized above all by the extremely economical use of the existing building fabric. Existing buildings have corridors and corridors in front of them in order to achieve a uniform appearance. The collegiate church was also built using parts of the previous Gothic building.

For years, Übelbacher kept writing calendars in which he entered appointments, event logs and diary-like notes as well as jokes and recipes in German and Latin. 14 calendars written in detail are preserved in the Herzogenburg Abbey Archives . The texts were first published in book form in 2013.

Provost Hieronymus Übelbacher died on January 13, 1740 and was buried in the crypt of Dürnstein Abbey.
