Johannes Wilhelm Peters

Johannes Wilhelm "Hans" Peters (born December 10, 1927 in Uedem ; † April 27, 1999 ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life

Hans Peters learned the trade of shoemaker. He took part in World War II and was captured. From 1951 he worked as a miner, and from 1955 to 1956 he also attended the Dortmund Social Academy. Working in the mining industry, he joined IG Bergbau und Energie , where he was secretary in the head office from 1961 to 1973. He then headed the housing management of the Neue Heimat until 1979 .

In 1955 Peters joined the SPD, for which he was a member of the Dortmund City Council from 1969 to 1979 and then from 1979 to 1994 a member of the European Parliament . From 1989 to 1994 he was Vice-President of Parliament and the Bureau. He was also vice-chairman of the Committee on Social Affairs and Employment from 1979 to 1984.

His commitment to Europe went beyond parliamentary activities, for example he was Vice-President of the Europa-Union Germany and from 1994 to 1998 he was an executive member of the Presidium. He also held the post of Vice President in the European Movement Germany . He was also chairman of the European Citizenship Academy .
