Johannes van der Spyck
Johannes van der Spyck , also Spijck ( bl. 1716–1761 in Leiden ) was a Dutch engraver, etcher and illustrator.
Life
There is no known information about the origin and death of Johannes van der Spyck. It is sometimes assumed in the literature that he was born and died in Leiden. Johannes van der Spyck was a student of the book illustrator Frans van Bleyswijck from 1716 . He enrolled at the University of Leiden on March 2, 1736 and then worked as a copper engraver in Leiden. Also in 1736 he became a member of the Leiden Guild of St. Luke and can be traced back to 1761 as a copper engraver.
His first works are from the year 1737 with the title of Hendrik Schims Dichttaferelen or the illustrations of Jan Swammerdam's bybel of the natuure of historie der insects , published postmortem in 1737 . Many of his other works also repeatedly show a scientific reference to zoology and botany.
