The city church

The Johanneskirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Vacha in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

history

The history of the church is closely linked to the development of the city through its location. A pastor in Übelacker was first mentioned in 1172. The foundation walls of the tower also date from around this time. Of the Gothic church building, which was probably started around 1306, only the tower top is preserved today. After a city fire in 1467, the church was rebuilt by the end of the 15th century. In the course of the Reformation it became a Protestant town church .

The Thirty Years War and the Seven Years War repeatedly caused damage. From 1818 one had to switch to the monastery church for the services . On June 24, 1821, the foundation stone was laid for the new church, which was inaugurated on September 3, 1824 by Superintendent Nebe from Eisenach . Further work such as painting the rooms and renovation work followed.
