The church

The monastery church in Vacha in the Wartburg district in Thuringia is an Evangelical-Lutheran church that is used as a chapel for the surrounding cemetery. The building is rebuilt, the choir of a Gothic Servite - monastery church , whose other parts were demolished after the lifting of the Convention.

history

Before 1339 a Servite monastery was founded in Mariengart near Vacha. In 1368 it was moved to its present location in front of the medieval city wall; Mariengart remained a branch. The monastery church was completed around 1400.

During the Peasants' War in 1525, insurgent peasants invaded the monastery. Prior Peter von Aschenberg signed the Twelve Articles . Two years later, Philip of Hesse had all monasteries in his domain abolished. The convent buildings in Vacha were demolished. As the second church after the Johanneskirche , the church was preserved for Protestant worship. The monastery courtyard became the municipal cemetery.

One aisle of the church was lost in the Seven Years' War . In 1877/78 the rest of the nave was demolished because it was in disrepair; the only remaining choir with side chapel has been restored. Significant wall paintings from 1472 - Marienleben  - were rediscovered and uncovered. Several late medieval epitaphs also testify to the history of the church .

Since 2003, the former monastery church has been the end point of the Thuringian section of the ecumenical pilgrimage through central Germany from Görlitz to Vacha.
