Johanniskirche (Stargard)
The Church of St. John the Baptist (Polish Kościół św. Jana Chrzciciela ) is a late Gothic brick building in Stargard in Poland . Until 1945 it was a Protestant parish church in Stargard in Pomerania .
history
On the remains of a stone church from the 13th century, which had belonged to the Order of St. John , a new three-aisled hall church with a tower was built from 1408 . Construction was completed in 1464, and at the end of the 15th century the choir was expanded and rebuilt.
In the following centuries there were further modifications and additions. The St. John's Church survived the town fire of 1635 without major damage. It was hardly damaged in the two world wars either.
It has been part of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland since 1945.
Architecture and equipment
The Johanniskirche is a three-aisled hall church with a choir and tower made of brick. In the ambulatory there is a cell vault of the chapels, which is unique in Pomerania.
The interior includes medieval choir stalls from the Augustinian Church, three grave tablets from the 17th century and other pieces of equipment.
The Gothic tower, which was built between 1408 and 1464, collapsed in 1697. It was rebuilt by 1699. It is provided with a Stargarder cover. In the years 1892 to 1893 it was fitted with a new tower helmet and increased to 99 meters.
