John Abthorpe (born January 19, 1933 in Mansfield , † July 7, 2005 ibid) was an English football player .

Career

Abthorpe was active in the 1952/53 season as an amateur with the Wolverhampton Wanderers and came there first for the Juniors to use and also scored six goals in seven missions for the reserve team in the Central League during the season . In the 1954/55 season he played for Mansfield United and represented an English university selection against Scotland and appeared for the Leicestershire & Rutland FA in appearance. After successfully completing his Bachelor of Science degree from Leicester University College in August 1955 , he auditioned for Notts County and won two goals in a public friendly. Abthorpe knew the Notts County coach, George Poyser , from his time in Wolverhampton, where he was active as a trainer and chief scout.

Abthorpe kept his amateur status at Notts County and replaced the regular center forward Jimmy Jackson in a game on September 3, 1955 at West Ham United and is said to be the club's first amateur in the center-forward position in over 70 years in the 6-1 defeat be. On his debut in the Football League Second Division , he scored the consolation goal after playing out Malcolm Allison and Noel Cantwell in a solo run and finishing with a placed shot. For his goal he received praise from opposing center runner Allison: "He placed the shot like a veteran when George Taylor , our goalkeeper, shortened the angle". An injury against West Ham prevented a use in the following game. From October, four more missions followed, he was again successful as a goalscorer in the 1-1 draw against Doncaster Rovers , as well as in his fifth and final appearance in early November in a 3-0 win against Plymouth Argyle .

On November 7, 1955 Abthorpe played a test match with the English amateur national team , the game against Crystal Palace was lost 3-0. For the following amateur international match on November 12th against Germany at White Hart Lane , he was not fit in time after a groin injury and replaced by Tony Biggs . Abthorpe did his military service during his time with Notts County, in September 1956 the club unsuccessfully requested clearance from his unit, the Royal Artillery in Oswestry .
