John Atkins (born April 7, 1942 in Coventry ) is a retired British cyclist and national cycling champion .

Athletic career

Atkins was a specialist in cyclo-cross racing . In this discipline he was British champion thirteen times. He won his first national title in 1961. A year later he defended the title. After that, he had to take a break from sport for a few years due to illness. After finishing 5th at the UCI World Championships in 1968 when Roger de Vlaeminck won , he turned professional . His winning streak at the British Championships began in 1966 and lasted until 1975. In 1977 he won the title again. At the World Championships for professionals, 7th place in 1973 was his best result. In 1971 he wanted to compete on the road with the continental European professionals and started near Paris-Nice . He finished the race but was well behind the winner Eddy Merckx and finished 69th and last of the race. He was a professional driver from 1968 to 1979, almost always in British teams. Nevertheless, he still pursued another profession, as he could not make a living from cycling alone.
