John Bacon the Elder

John Bacon the Elder RA (born November 24, 1740 in Southwark , London , † August 4, 1799 ibid) was a British sculptor , porcelain painter and ceramic modeller .

Life

At the age of 14, John Bacon joined a porcelain factory , where he first worked as a painter , but later discovered his talent for modeling . In 1770 he created perhaps his best-known work, a statue of Mars in marble , which also earned him membership in the royal academy that same year. The grave monument to William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham can be seen in Westminster Abbey , other monuments in Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford , such as two busts of the kingGeorge III

In 1769 he won the Royal Academy of Arts gold medal , to which he was elected on February 11, 1778.
