John Baillie (1942)

John Baillie (born March 26, 1886 in Gairloch , † September 29, 1960 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish Presbyterian theologian.

Life

Baillie was born the son of a Free Church of Scotland pastor . He studied Protestant theology at the University of Edinburgh , University of Jena and Philipps University in Marburg (summer semester 1911) . In 1920 he received a teaching position at Auburn Theological Seminary , in 1928 at Emmanuel College in Toronto and in 1930 at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York . In 1934 Baillie became professor of theology and finally in 1950 rector at the New College of the University of Edinburgh. In 1943 he was the moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland . Baillie supported the ecumenical movement . He was one of the Presidents of the World Council of Churches from 1954 to 1961 . He campaigned unsuccessfully for a union between the Church of Scotland and the Church of England . In 1958 he received an honorary doctorate (D. theol. Hc) from the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena on the occasion of the university's 400th anniversary.

The theology professor Donald Macpherson Baillie (1887-1954) was his brother. He had studied in Marburg in the summer semester of 1910 and in the winter semester of 1910/11.
