John Blackwall (born January 20, 1790 in Manchester , † May 11, 1881 in Hendre House near Llanrwst , Wales ) was a British naturalist.

Blackwall lived in Llanrwst in North Wales from 1833 until his death . From a young age he was interested in nature; at first he was interested in birds , later in spiders . He published his first article on spiders in 1827.

He published "A History of the Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland (2 vols., 1861-1864)" (History of the Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland). It comprised 340 species and was the first adequate description of the British arachnid. Ten of the tables were made by Octavius Pickard-Cambridge and twelve more by the Irish naturalist Robert Templeton .

Blackwall's work highlighted the significant gaps in natural science in this area and clarified the need for research in arachnology . He was particularly interested in the very small species, such as the canopy spiders Neriene and Walckenaera .
