Robert Templeton (born December 12, 1802 , † June 2, 1892 ) was a British military doctor and naturalist ( entomologist ).

Life

Templeton was the son of the botanist John Templeton (1766-1825), went to school in Belfast and studied medicine in Edinburgh from 1821. In 1833 he became a military doctor at the Royal Artillery. He was stationed in Mauritius, Rio de Janeiro, Ceylon, Malta, Corfu and Albania and again in Ceylon from 1839 to 1851, where he also visited India several times. He was collecting insects and invertebrates everywhere. He then took part in the Crimean War, became a surgeon major (1855) and retired in 1860.

His first entomological publications concerned shaggy tails (Thysanura) in 1836 , of which he described several new species. In Ceylon he collected butterflies, beetles and hymenoptera, partly with Edgar Leopold Layard , many of them described by other scientists such as Francis Walker (1809–1874). Templeton was a good draftsman and captured most of his finds in drawings and watercolors. Much of the collection went to the Natural History Museum , while other parts went to the Ulster Museum in Belfast. In addition to insects, he also collected mollusks, for example, also with descriptions of new species. He also discovered new birds on Ceylon (described by Edward Blyth or Layard) and studied the monkeys. The results of his observation found their way into Ceylon. An Account of the Island, Physical, Historical, and Topographical by James Emerson Tennent (1859). Templeton also published on spiders.
