John Boyd (playwright)

John Boyd (born 1912 in Belfast ; † 2002 ) was a Northern Irish playwright .

Life

John Boyd's primary residence was Belfast throughout his life. He has taught creative writing classes at Queen's University Belfast . The main subjects of his works concern the riots in Northern Ireland in 1975 and 1976. His main work is the play The Flats . John Boyd was the son of a train driver, grew up in East Belfast and felt part of the working class. He attended Queen's University in Belfast and Trinity College in Dublin and has worked as a teacher, lecturer and director on the BBC, radio and television. He was Honorary Director of the Lyrik Theater in Belfast and did not begin to write dramas until he was retired.

John Boyd says in the foreword to "Facing North" about his work: A playwright should not be above things, but he should look at what is happening from above.
