John Boydell
John Boydell (born January 19, 1719 in Dorington , † December 12, 1804 in London ) was an English engraver .
Life
Boydell became very wealthy through his artistic work. He could easily afford the office of Lord Mayor of London .
His most important company was the Shakespeare Gallery . Although only a third completed, it had a great impact on romantic art. Many of these works were commissioned, which Boydell then used to create his engravings.
Boydell commissioned the young Johann Heinrich Ramberg for his Shakespeare Gallery with the Malvolio scene from "What you want" (owned by the Yale Center for British Art , New Haven, Connecticut, USA ).
Boydell signed his own works with JB exc.
John Boydell died in 1804 at his home on Cheapside , London, at the age of 85 .
