John Ray Burritt (born June 23, 1934 in Cedaredge , Colorado - † January 7, 2015 ) was an American cross-country skier and biathlete .

John Burritt was a versatile athlete. He was wrestler, athlete and won in 1951 with the team from Hotchkiss , the Colorado state high school football championship. As a boxer he was champion of the Ragion Western Slope in Colorado in the weight class up to 78 kilograms. When he moved to Western State College , he also began cross-country skiing and took part in the NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956 . The high point of his sporting career was taking part in the first ever Olympic biathlon race at the 1960 Olympic Games in Squaw Valley . With a time of one hour and 36: 36.8 minutes, he was only the sixth worst runner of the 30 participants, but benefited from his comparatively good shooting performance. Burrit hit 15 of the 20 targets and only got ten penalty minutes. He finished the race in 14th place overall and was the best starter in his national association. After his active career, he worked as a laboratory technician and X-ray specialist at Delta Memorial Hospital in Delta , Colorado. After he retired to the family farm in 1980, he built a holiday home and a mountain for alpine skiing in Grand Mesa , where he worked as a ski instructor.
