John D'Amico (ice hockey referee)

John David D'Amico (born September 21, 1937 in Toronto , Ontario - † May 29, 2005 ) was a Canadian ice hockey linesman in the National Hockey League (NHL) and later the supervisor of officials . He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.

Toronto-born D'Amico began his career in the NHL on October 12, 1964 at the age of 28 as a referee . After only 19 games, he was already used as a linesman , which is of crucial importance in ice hockey .

In total, D'Amico was involved in 1,689 regular competitive games of the Canadian NHL until his departure in 1987, plus 247 appearances in the play-offs of the Stanley Cup .

D'Amicos' health problems were induced by a heart attack in September 2002 and had to be bypassed . They also found abnormal blood values that led to the formation of gallstones . In addition, leukemia and bone cancer were soon diagnosed. Shortly before his death, he attracted public attention when he spoke about the poor quality of the Canadian health system.

Until the end he worked as a supervisor (referee expectant, overseer of all officials of an ice hockey game) in the NHL.

John David D'Amico died on May 29, 2005, leaving behind his wife Dorothy, a daughter Tina and three sons Angelo, Jeff, Anthony. Angelo D'Amico is also a linesman in the NHL.
