John Dundurs

John Dundurs (* as Janis Valdemars Dundurs on September 13, 1922 in Riga ) is an American engineer.

Dundurs studied in Latvia, Dresden and Stuttgart (but could not graduate due to the war) and at Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in engineering in 1951, a master's degree in 1955 and a doctorate from Miklos Hetenyi in 1958 ( Elastic Plates with Circular Inserts Subjected to Concentrated Forces ). In between he developed diesel engines at International Harvester in 1952/53 and carried out research in Northwestern's hydraulic laboratory in 1953/54. In 1955 he became an instructor and in 1966 a professor of civil engineering. In 1994 he retired.

He deals with elasticity theory, fracture mechanics, friction.

In 1990 he received the Von Karman Medal .
