John Arthur Duttine (born March 15, 1949 in Barnsley , South Yorkshire , England ) is a British film and theater actor .

Life

John Duttine was the youngest of five sons of Josef and Edith Duttine in Barnsley; his father died when John was only five years old. Already in his youth he knew he wanted to be an actor, so after graduating from Buttershaw Comprehensive School he studied acting at the Drama Center in London . From 1970 to 1973 he was then a member of the Watford Repertory Company .

Duttine's film career began in 1973, starring in the four-part drama A Pin to See the Peepshow , alongside Francesca Annis and Bernard Hepton . His work was then mostly limited to British television series and television films. In comparison to other British actors, he was neither booked for Hollywood productions nor was Duttine well known in the rest of Europe. His long-term most successful film was the 1977 Bible adaptation Jesus of Nazareth by director Franco Zeffirelli , in which Duttine played the apostle John . Another film in which Duttine was seen was the 1982 action film Das Kommando .

Today Duttine is a sought-after British television and theater actor who also provides his voice for commercials and film documentaries. At the same time, he campaigns for political issues, is a member of the environmental protection organization Greenpeace and is involved in the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament .

For a long time Duttine led a single existence, having his only child, son Oscar James, born in 1981, from a relationship with the Briton Carolyn Hutchinson. After Duttine separated from his partner in the early 1990s, he met actress Mel Martin in 1992 , with whom he has also been married since 1998.
