John Erskine, 26th Earl of Mar

John Francis Miller Erskine, 26th Earl of Mar ( December 28, 1795 - June 19, 1866 ), was a British nobleman .

Life

He was the only son and heir of John Erskine, 25th Earl of Mar (1772-1828) from his marriage to Janet Miller († 1825).

He was educated at Westminster School and participated as a soldier in the summer campaign of 1815 .

When his father died on September 20, 1828, he inherited his title as 26th Earl of Mar , 19th Lord Garioch and 14th Lord Erskine .

Since the childless death of his relative Methven Erskine, 10th Earl of Kellie (around 1750-1829) on December 3, 1829, he also had an inheritance claim to his title as 11th Earl of Kellie , 11th Viscount Fentoun , 11th Lord Erskine of Dirletoun and 11. Lord Dirletoun . Due to the distant degree of relationship - he was his great-great-great-nephew, eighth degree - these titles were not officially confirmed to him until September 3, 1835.

On April 24, 1827 he married Philadelphia Stuart († 1853), daughter of Sir Charles Granville Stuart-Menteth, 1st Baronet (of Closeburn). The marriage remained childless.

On his death, his title of nobility, Earl of Kellie and subordinate titles, and the title of Lord Erskine fell to his cousin Walter Erskine as the closest male relative. A legal dispute arose over the inheritance of the title Earl of Mar (with the subordinate title Lord Garioch ) as to whether it was exclusively male or female to his sister Frances Goodeve (née Erskine, † 1842) and her descendants. The legal disputes ultimately led to the curious result that - until then, undiscovered - there had been two parallel titles of "Earl of Mar", of which the older, 1404 originated, was also hereditary in the female line and in 1885 Frances' son John Goodeve-Erskine as 27.
