John Frederick (actor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Frederick (actually Frederick Striffler ; born July 4, 1916 in Norwalk , Iowa , † November 11, 2012 in Palm Springs , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Frederick grew up on his family's farm and traveled to Hollywood for the first time at 16, fascinated by the film business, for which he had sold a calf to finance the trip. After studying at Drake University and the University of Iowa, he worked for some time as a teacher, but soon went to New York, where he began a stage career. His athletic figure, his gnarled face and his deep voice predestined him for tough, robust, not always friendly types. He also played these roles in his film career, which lasted from 1943 to 1971, in which he was mostly seen in westerns and war films and at the end of which he shot a few films in Italy .

In 1999 Frederick, who let himself be referred to as John Merrick for a time because he wanted to avoid confusion with a well-known hat manufacturer, published a life review called "Name Droppings on Your Head".

Frederick was active in numerous guest roles for television; in addition, 18 episodes of a Superman series with him in the title role were shot in the late 1950s, according to him. The episodes never aired because the producers only intended the recording to put pressure on actor George Reeves , who actually played the role.
