John George Nicolay
John George Nicolay (born February 26, 1832 in Essingen (Palatinate) , † September 26, 1901 ) was a private secretary and biographer of Abraham Lincoln .
He moved to the United States with his father in 1838 and in 1861 became private secretary of the newly elected US President Abraham Lincoln. He held this post until Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Together with John Hay he published the official biography of Lincoln in 1890. The work comprises several volumes and has long been considered the most comprehensive source on Lincoln's life.
In 1881 he published a book about the outbreak of the American Civil War . He also wrote the sections about it for The Cambridge Modern History .
